The upgrades will benefit more than 4,600 customers in Caguas and Gurabo and include the maintenance of a key voltage regulator as part of an islandwide plan to optimize more than 200 LTCs
Caguas, Puerto Rico, May 21, 2025 – As part of the ongoing electric system modernization plan, LUMA will carry out maintenance work tomorrow, Thursday, May 22, at the Caguax substation in Caguas, benefiting more than 4,600 customers in this municipality and nearby sectors around the Turabo area in Gurabo.
One of the key tasks includes maintenance of the transformer’s voltage regulator, known as a Load Tap Changer (LTC), a critical component that helps regulate the voltage customers receive and minimize fluctuations. This equipment requires maintenance every four years to ensure optimal performance and support the continuous operation of the transformer.
“This LTC maintenance is part of an islandwide plan that will allow us to correct more than 200 voltage regulators in substations across Puerto Rico, strengthening the reliability of the entire electric system,” said Cristino Serrano, LUMA’s East Region Substations Supervisor.
In addition, LUMA substation crews will be performing the following tasks:
- Transformer maintenance and protection: inspection and repair of the transformer’s protection systems and auxiliary components that support safe and efficient operations.
- Replacement of critical equipment: installation of new lightning arresters, disconnect switches, and circuit breakers, as well as replacement of key components in feeders that deliver service to communities.
- Installation of equipment to protect wildlife: specialized protections will be installed to safeguard animals that move through areas near power lines.
As part of the preparation for this work, LUMA teams conducted an analysis to minimize service interruptions for most substation customers. As a result, only approximately 137 customers are expected to experience service interruptions during a scheduled period from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The specific areas that may be affected can be found on the Planned Upgrades Portal.
These efforts are being carried out in coordination with the municipalities and in compliance with strict safety protocols and the highest industry standards.
