LUMA Announces Critical Maintenance at the Alturas de Mayagüez Substation

Mayagüez, PR – May 5, 2026 – LUMA informs all residential and commercial customers in Mayagüez that today, Tuesday, May 5, 2026, critical and planned maintenance is being carried out on the transformer at the Alturas de Mayagüez 6012 substation, as part of the Critical and Preventive Maintenance Plan to strengthen and improve the reliability of the electrical system in the region.

This plan is part of a proactive maintenance approach that allows the company to address identified conditions in the system using available resources, minimizing the risk of these issues becoming major failures and enabling more reliable service for customers.

Due to operational limitations in the electrical system, approximately 9,390 customers may experience an interruption of electric service for an estimated period of 10 hours. Work began at 7:00 a.m. and will conclude around 5:00 p.m. To view the areas that could be affected by the scheduled work, visit: lumapr.com/mejorasplanificadas/

During a recent evaluation, the need to perform work related to the transformer’s oil levels and condition was identified. This type of repair requires the equipment to be completely out of operation to ensure the safety of technical personnel and the community.

“We recognize the impact this work may have on homes, businesses, and daily activities. However, this maintenance is part of a planned approach to addressing system needs in a timely manner, strengthening the stability and reliability of the electrical system in the Mayagüez area,” said Hendzon Martinez, Director of Substation Operations.

We encourage customers to take necessary preparation measures and stay informed through our official platforms.
