Mayor of Carolina commends LUMA for support and implementation of critical infrastructure improvements in the community

San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 13, 2022 – As part of the LUMA’s commitment to building a more reliable and more resilient energy future for its 1.5 million customers, LUMA utility crews recently conducted important electric infrastructure work to help address local priorities in the municipality of Carolina. Working in close coordination with officials with the Municipality of Carolina, LUMA was able to address key community concerns and repair streetlights on Baldorioty de Castro Avenue, the main access road to Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

“In Carolina, we have established an ambitious Infrastructure Project Plan that aims not only to transform it into a more modern city, but we are also working to make it a more resilient and safer one. Working together with LUMA has been very beneficial to address the electrical infrastructure that is so important to maintaining the high quality of life we have achieved in Carolina. We value the importance of this collaborative effort because we know how necessary it is to have a more solid and reliable electrical infrastructure,” said Carolina Mayor Jose Carlos Aponte Dalmau.

In addition to the recent streetlight repairs, LUMA also worked closely with the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) and the Municipality of Carolina as they repaired a damaged underground water pipe that was causing poor road condition on Sanchez Vilella Avenue, also known as Campo Rico Avenue. The critical infrastructure improvement efforts in Carolina are just part of LUMA’s overall efforts to improve resiliency in communities by rebuilding or repairing streetlights across Puerto Rico.

“LUMA is happy to work with local governments to continue identifying areas for improvement to the electric system and implement projects that improve conditions where local infrastructure intersects with the electric grid,” said LUMA President and CEO Wayne Stensby.

This week, LUMA announced the approval of funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for the first phase of the “Community Streetlighting Initiative”. Upon approval of the additional FEMA funding, LUMA will replace approximately 22,000 streetlights across five municipalities will improve the safety, resiliency, and energy efficiency of the electrical system. These five street lighting projects are the beginning of an ambitious program to bring Puerto Rico’s streetlighting system up to modern standards.
