LUMA ‘Fighting Fraud During the Holidays’ is the latest phase of its year-round public awareness initiative designed to protect LUMA’s 1.5 million customers against scams and fraud

San Juan, Puerto Rico — December 7, 2023 – This holiday season, LUMA is announcing its holiday safety campaign, Fighting Fraud During the Holidays, the latest phase of its year-round fraud awareness campaign to help customers and their families protect themselves against scams and fraudulent activity during this special time of year. “LUMA is determined to provide our customers with real actions on how we can all work together to fight fraud during the holidays. We know fraud activity tends to increase during the holiday season – it’s a busy time of year and scammers try to take advantage of that. That’s why we’re promoting our Fighting Fraud During the Holidays safety tips and resources to help customers protect themselves against potential illegal scams,” said Noriette Figueroa-Meléndez, Director of LUMA’s Voice of the Customer.

LUMA encourages the public to stay vigilant and follow these safety tips and reminders:

  1. Protect Your Information: Remember that LUMA will NEVER reach out to customers to request financial or personal information via phone or social media.
  2. Be Aware of Suspicious Calls: If customers receive a call from a suspicious or unknown number requesting payment, they should hang up and report the call to their local police department.
  3. Protect Yourself Online: When shopping online, customers should avoid ads that offer rebates for their electric bill and never engage with social media posts or messages requesting payment.
  4. Make Payments Safely: As an important reminder,LUMA does NOT request payments through pre-paid debit cards, gift cards, PayPal, Venmo, or ATH Móvil.
  5. Be Vigilant: Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, so always protect your information – whether it’s your LUMA account information or private financial information.
