Storm Center: Get ready for this season

Hurricane season in Puerto Rico runs from June 1 to November 30.Our commitment is to be ready to respond quickly and safely to any emergency.

Today, we have 22 material warehouses across the island, including 31,000 poles, 9.9 million feet of cable, and 6,300 transformers ready for installation. Our team of over 4,500 employees has accumulated more than 39,000 hours of training, and we maintain pre-positioned contracts, collaboration agreements, and communication systems with all 78 municipalities.

LUMA follows its Emergency Response Plan (ERP) year-round. This plan is aligned with the highest standards of the federal National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS). This allows us to work and coordinate at the federal, state, and municipal levels.

However, to restore service as quickly as possible after a storm, it is essential to have the $30 million deposit in the emergency fund, which has not been received since 2022. This funding is critical to respond with the speed Puerto Rico needs and to continue executing projects that improve service for everyone.

Your Hurricane Preparedness Guide

Before the Hurricane

  • Secure loose objects that could be carried by the wind and hit power lines.
  • Trim tree branches that are close to the cables near your home.
  • Have an emergency kit ready with flashlights, batteries, portable chargers, and water.

During the Hurricane

  • Shelter in a safe place and avoid going outside.

After the Hurricane

  • Listen to the radio for official instructions.
  • Never touch downed power lines or wet equipment.
  • Call a certified electrician before using equipment if your home sustained damage.

Your Safety Comes First

When encountering downed power lines, it is vital to act with caution. Never try to move or lift them, as they may be energized and pose a safety hazard.

People first. Safety always.

Fallen Trees or Branches

Never approach a downed power line. Assume it is energized and stay at least 35 feet away. If a line falls on your car, stay inside! The vehicle protects you. Call 1-844-888-5862 and wait for emergency crews to arrive.

If you find yourself in any of these situations, follow these recommendations:

  • If a power line falls on your vehicle, do not attempt to remove it.
  • Call 9-1-1 and wait for emergency services or LUMA personnel before moving

We are committed and ready to respond to any emergency

All LUMA employees work 24/7 to provide the electric service that Puerto Rico deserves.
