These improvements strengthen the reliability of the electric system in the Bayamón region.
Bayamón, Puerto Rico – November 4, 2025 – As part of ongoing efforts to enhance the reliability of Puerto Rico’s electric system, LUMA crews have completed maintenance and modernization work at the Bayamón town substation. These upgrades directly benefit more than 1,500 customers, including a significant number of commercial and municipal facilities in the area.
“During the work, we replaced 38 kV disconnect switches (commonly known as ‘machetes’) that had been out of service for over five years, as well as lightning arresters that protect equipment during severe weather conditions. We also completed maintenance on the substation’s main transformer, which had not been serviced in over 15 years,” said Reinaldo Aponte Colón, Substation Maintenance Supervisor for LUMA’s Eastern Region, who has over 23 years of experience in the island’s electric system.
One of the most important components of this maintenance effort was the activation of the voltage regulator, which will improve the quality of voltage received by customers, reducing fluctuations and enhancing service stability. Insulators were also replaced, and wildlife protectors were installed—devices designed to prevent outages caused by animals entering the substation.
These efforts build on previous work at the Bayamón Pueblo substation, where on October 20, 2025, a portable substation was installed to maintain service to customers while maintenance was performed on the main transformer and the load tap changer (which addresses voltage issues), which had not been serviced in 16 years. This intervention benefited nearly 1,000 additional customers.
LUMA reiterated that the continuation of these efforts depends on the availability of funds in the designated accounts for maintenance and modernization of the transmission and distribution system.
