Update on the Santa Isabel Transformer

(July 11, 2024) Since June 9th, LUMA took a series of specific steps to ensure that our customers in Santa Isabel, Coamo and Aibonito had reliable power. We implemented our plan to replace the Santa Isabel transformer, which included a backup plan in case the initial replacement transformer failed key safety and reliability tests. Following industry-standard procedures and protocols, the replacement transformer was tested by LUMA’s specialized substation team prior to and after its transportation. After successfully energizing the transformer and during the on-site subsequent tests that are required before connecting it to our customers, the equipment failed due to an internal issue within the transformer. While the service of our customers in Santa Isabel, Coamo and Aibonito will not be impacted, LUMA cannot place a transformer that has failed these critical tests into service. As LUMA made clear last month, we will move forward with a back-up plan which will include relocating an alternative transformer from Maunabo. To be clear, service to all our customers in the area will not be impacted over the subsequent four to six weeks as the replacement transformer is installed and tested for reliability and safety. In addition, we continue working on the reconstruction of lines 100 and 200, which will provide additional reliability for customers in the area.
