RESTORATION UPDATE: LUMA RESTORES POWER TO 98% OF ALL CUSTOMERS IMPACTED BY HURRICANE FIONA

POWER HAS BEEN FULLY RESTORED TO 90% OF CUSTOMERS IN THE MAYAGUEZ SERVICE REGION AND 99% OF ALL PRASA WATER FACILITIES

San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 8, 2022 – Today, LUMA announced that it has restored electric service to 1,433,064 customers, or 98% of total customers across the island following Category 1 Hurricane Fiona. LUMA also shared that it had restored power to 90% of customers in the Mayagüez service region as of Friday night.

“While we have reached a significant milestone of 90% of restored customers in Mayagüez, we continue to mobilize and devote the majority of our resources, including hundreds of utility field workers, trucks, diggers, and helicopters to the west and southwest regions. LUMA and all of our partners remain completely focused on restoring power to the remaining communities and customers across the island. No matter the extent of damage, or access difficulty, LUMA and our crews will continue to work safely and tirelessly until all our customers are restored,” said LUMA Engineer Daniel Hernández.

Current Restoration Updates – Specific Service Regions

As of 8:00 AM, LUMA has restored electric service to 98% of total customers. In terms of specific service regions, LUMA has restored service to:

  • 100% of customers in both San Juan and Bayamón
  • 99% of customers in the service region of Caguas
  • 99% of customers in the service region of Arecibo
  • 95% of customers in the service region of Ponce.
  • 90% of customers in the service region of Mayagüez

LUMA has also fully restored service to 100% of hospitals, and 99% of all PRASA water facilities.

Restoration Prioritization in Hardest Hit Areas

The Mayagüez and Ponce service regions experienced the strongest parts of Hurricane Fiona, including the eye of the storm where winds reached over 100 miles per hour and dropped over 30 inches of rain that caused severe floods, mudslides, and washed-out roads and bridges. Critical parts of the electric grid and generation facilities in these regions were severely damaged. Crews are continuing to make progress restoring power despite ongoing local weather challenges, difficult terrain, as well as roads washed away from Hurricane Fiona. To address these issues, crews are utilizing helicopters where possible to bring crews and equipment in for local repairs.
