PROGRESS IN PUERTO RICO: LUMA PARTNERS WITH DEPT OF EDUCATION, LOCAL SCHOOLS TO OFFER NEW EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENERGY WORKERS

San Juan, Puerto Rico —April 4, 2023 – LUMA met with members of the Department of Education on Friday to sign a historic agreement to partner with local high schools on educational and training opportunities. This agreement builds on a series of educational agreements that LUMA has signed with local universities to promote post-graduate career opportunities that are critical to building the next generation of energy workers vital to Puerto Rico’s energy future.

“We are proud to be partnering with the Department of Education and local schools to invest in Puerto Rico’s next generation workforce,” said Dr. Shay Bahramirad, Senior Vice President of Engineering, Asset Management and Capital Programs at LUMA. “LUMA is committed to our communities and providing exciting new educational opportunities that will help build a brighter and more prosperous future for Puerto Rico.”

LUMA has also formalized partnerships with Inter American University of Puerto Rico – Bayamón and Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico. Additionally, LUMA will be signing a partnership agreement with Ana G. Méndez University in Gurabo on May 12.

These educational partnerships are among several opportunities LUMA is providing across communities to empower the development of the next generation of energy workers. LUMA’s College for Technical Training has graduated over 70 Puerto Rican apprentice lineworkers since 2021 to help train a broad array of energy workers.  The company also prioritizes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) training through initiatives such as its “Power Your Future” program to further educate and inspire female students with an interest in STEM fields.
