Proactive Improvements to Transmission Line in Ceiba Strengthen the Electric Grid in the Eastern Region

Ceiba, Puerto Rico – September 9, 2025 – As part of preventive maintenance and efforts to transform the electrical system, LUMA crews mobilized to hard-to-access towers along Road 974 in Ceiba to correct hot spots on transmission line 36200. This 115,000-volt (115kV) line runs from Fajardo TC to Daguao TC in Naguabo and directly serves over 14,000 customers in the area.

So-called hot spots are areas on transmission lines where connections heat up more than normal and, if left unaddressed, can pose a risk to the reliable operation of the electrical system. These spots are identified through aerial inspections and the use of thermographic cameras, which graphically display temperatures on lines and system components.

“These tasks are critical for the reliability of the system, especially during hurricane season. Correcting hot spots allows us to minimize outages and continue strengthening the island’s electric grid,” said engineer Hamilton Lugo, Director of Transmission Line Operations, who noted that this project is funded through operational funds.

LUMA reiterated that, during the peak of hurricane season, having funds available in the appropriate accounts is essential to continue carrying out this type of critical work across the island and to keep improving the resilience of Puerto Rico’s electrical system.
