Toa Baja, Puerto Rico – October 20, 2025 – LUMA crews completed a series of preventive maintenance tasks at the Candelaria Arena substation in Toa Baja, benefiting over 8,000 customers in the area.
As part of efforts to strengthen the reliability of the electric service and minimize outages, crews carried out the following work at the substation:
- Correction of hot spots identified through thermographic inspection.
- Installation of wildlife protectors to prevent outages caused by animal contact with the electrical system.
- Replacement of lightning arresters to improve protection against atmospheric discharges.
- Replacement of distribution auxiliaries (disconnect switches).
“Through this substation maintenance, we’re reinforcing the system and contributing to more reliable service for communities in the area. With proper planning, service was transferred to other substations, allowing the work to be completed without interrupting service,” said Reinaldo Aponte, LUMA’s Eastern Substation Maintenance Supervisor.
Additionally, as part of the preventive maintenance and substation modernization program, LUMA continues work at the Bayamón Pueblo substation. A portable substation was installed there to maintain service while maintenance is performed on the main transformer and tap changer (which addresses voltage issues), which had gone 16 years without maintenance. This work benefits approximately 1,000 additional customers.
However, the transmission and distribution company emphasized that more work of this kind could be carried out if the necessary funds are deposited into the appropriate accounts to maintain and modernize the system.
