NEW PUBLIC TOOLS RELEASED: LUMA PROVIDES COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION ON DAMAGE CAUSED BY HURRICANE FIONA

TWO NEW PUBLIC RESOURCES WILL ALSO PROVIDE BREAKDOWN OF LUMA’S HISTORIC EMERGENCY RESPONSE & RESTORATION FOLLOWING CATEGORY 1 HURRICANE

San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 21, 2022 – Today, LUMA announced the launch of two new public tools that will provide the public a comprehensive description of the severity and scope of the damage inflicted by Hurricane Fiona on Puerto Rico’s electric transmission and distribution system. In addition, LUMA provides a detailed breakdown of the historic nature of LUMA’s emergency response and restoration effort undertaken by the over 3,000 men and women of LUMA.

These new public tools will provide an unprecedented level of detailed information on the extent of the damage and the significant actions taken by LUMA during its emergency restoration. Releasing this information reflects not only LUMA’s commitment to transparency but will help provide the facts that prove the historic effort the over 3,000 men and women of LUMA undertook for all our customers and every community” said LUMA Engineer Daniel Hernández.

Public Tool #1: Hurricane Fiona Damage Map

Among the tools released by LUMA include a historic first for Puerto Rico – an online Damage Map that shows the extent of damage Puerto Rico’s electric transmission and distribution system sustained following the impact of Hurricane Fiona. The Hurricane Fiona Damage Map will provide an overview of the more than 6,000 completed damage assessments completed in the immediate days following Fiona and includes photographic evidence showcasing the significant effect and damage that Fiona, and the 100 mph winds and 30+ inches of rain had on the electric system across Puerto Rico.

Overall, the Damage Map will provide a detailed resource for customers and other public stakeholders to better understand the scope of Hurricane Fiona’s devastation in Puerto Rico and better understand the challenges that LUMA immediately faced. The Damage Map will also provide additional insight into planning and actions that LUMA will undertake to complete more permanent repairs. The map showcases the significant work done to assess the extensive damage Hurricane Fiona inflicted on the grid, including:

  • Over $4 billion in damages sustained throughout the island
  • Over 6,000 damage assessments with photographic evidence
  • 54% of distribution feeders that sustained damage

Public Tool #2: Hurricane Fiona Response and Restoration Summary Report

LUMA also announced the release of a detailed event summary report that outlines the company’s historic emergency response and restoration efforts. This summary report includes an overview of the emergency response, detailed information on the resources deployed, overall and regional restoration timelines, information on crews and resources deployed by region and throughout the duration of the event and more.  Among the most impactful findings are:

  • Over 90% of customers restored in 12 days
  • Over 2,500 utility workers and over 2,500 vehicles deployed
  • 239 flight hours and over 12,000 miles flown by the 7 helicopter crews deployed
