As part of efforts to advance energy transformation and metering, 1.5 million smart meters will be installed across Puerto Rico
April 11, 2025 – San Juan, Puerto Rico – LUMA announced today the launch of the smart meter installation phase on the island. This marks a significant milestone in modernizing the electrical grid, improving energy efficiency, and creating a more modern, resilient, and sustainable energy system. The first smart meter was installed at the Nemesio Canales public housing in San Juan. Installations will begin progressively in this municipality and continue across the island in the coming years.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive plan to install 1.5 million smart meters across Puerto Rico, which will provide precise real-time data, enabling faster outage detection and more efficient service restoration. They will also reduce reliance on estimated billing and promote the integration of renewable energy sources. These devices will optimize the performance of the transmission and distribution grid while facilitating the integration of distributed energy resources like solar systems. LUMA personnel and local contractors will conduct the work, following strict safety protocols at every stage of the project.
“Installing smart meters is a fundamental step in our commitment to modernize Puerto Rico’s energy infrastructure. This technology optimizes consumption, improves efficiency, and empowers our citizens to make informed energy decisions. Together, we move toward a more sustainable and transparent future,” said Juan Rodríguez, Senior Vice President of Capital Programs at LUMA.
As part of its efforts to modernize the electrical grid, LUMA will implement Itron’s innovative platform, which includes 1.5 million advanced electrical meters and a new redundant communications network, the first of its kind in Puerto Rico’s history. It features advanced distributed grid intelligence, giving LUMA greater insight and control over the electrical grid, benefiting the people of Puerto Rico. With this platform, LUMA will improve system reliability, resilience, and customer service. Some of the platform’s benefits include:
- Better control for customers over energy consumption with more detailed usage information.
- Improved customer interaction and faster response during service restoration using advanced outage detection technology.
- Greater integration of renewable energy and adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar panels, battery storage systems, home EV charging, and microgrids.
- Support for new energy efficiency programs to help customers better manage their consumption.
- Enhanced visibility of substation operations to monitor the grid and respond to changes during clear days and significant weather events.
Since the assessment phase began in April 2024, over 250,000 units have been inspected. LUMA’s expert teams will continue initial field assessments to verify infrastructure readiness and determine optimal implementation strategies for installing smart meters across the island. During these assessments, they will identify infrastructure compatibility, meter locations, and customer accessibility. Customers will receive calls and messages announcing visits to their community, ensuring they can coordinate secure access to their meters.
