Media statement regarding attempt to invalidate the contract

We are reviewing the P3A’s filing to explore our legal options, remaining committed to Puerto Rico’s energy transformation.  Since 2021, thousands of committed Puerto Ricans that make up LUMA have been working to improve Puerto Rico’s transmission and distribution system with one goal in mind: giving its nearly 1.5 million customers the electric system they expect and deserve.   We are proud of the measurable progress we have made but there is still much more to be done.

Unfortunately, the politics that led to PREPA’s failure have resurfaced, so it is no surprise that the P3A has expressed their intent to invalidate LUMA’s contract regardless of the real and measurable progress that has been made to stabilize the system, which includes clearing vegetation, replacing electric poles, installing new transformers and breakers,  maintaining substations, replacing damaged transmission lines and, investing more than $2.4 billion in federally-funded projects. Even with PREPA’s lack of proper funding, all of these efforts are helping revitalize and strengthen the electric grid following decades of mismanagement and neglect.  This is on top of a decade-long, unresolved bankruptcy that places the financial burden of electric system improvements not covered by federal funds on the people of Puerto Rico.

Attempts to invalidate the contract at this point or change the terms of a legally binding contract send a troubling message to any company considering doing business in or investing in Puerto Rico. This action could also disrupt continuity at a critical moment, setting the island back and further delaying projects aimed at improving the electric system, increasing the risk of outages, slowing restoration times, and delays to federally funded improvements.

Our mission has not changed, and we will continue delivering the safe, reliable, and resilient grid the people of Puerto Rico deserve. We are confident that we remain the right solution for the future of Puerto Rico’s long-term grid transformation, and we will not be distracted by politically motivated actions that only serve to delay the restoration the people of Puerto Rico desperately need.
