LUMA’s Preventive Upgrades Optimize Electric Service for 12,300 Customers in Lares and Las Marías

These efforts are essential for the region, which is why it’s critical to have the necessary funding for system maintenance accounts.

Lares, Puerto Rico – October 28, 2025 – As part of an improvement plan for the electric system in the western region, LUMA complete the replacement and maintenance of critical equipment at the Lares and Las Marías substations, benefiting over 12,300 customers in the area.

At the Las Marías substation, crews replaced three lightning arresters—equipment that strengthens the system’s protection against atmospheric discharges, contributing to the reliability of electric service in the area.

Meanwhile, at the Lares substation, crews completed maintenance on the transformer’s voltage regulator (Load Tap Changer or LTC), a key component that regulates the voltage customers receive and minimizes fluctuations. This equipment requires maintenance every four years to ensure optimal performance and support the continuous operation of the transformer.

“Consistent maintenance like this is essential to extend the lifespan of our equipment and improve the quality of service our customers receive. However, it is crucial that the funds allocated for the maintenance of the transmission and distribution system are deposited on time, so we can continue executing these tasks according to the needs of the electric system,” emphasized Hendzon Martínez, Director of Substation Operations, who has over 22 years of experience in Puerto Rico’s electric system.
