Crews will be assigned during the festivities to attend to any situation due to the complexity of the electrical system in the VSJ
San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 16, 2025 – LUMA reaffirms its commitment to serving Puerto Rico by announcing its readiness for the 2025 Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián Street Festival. The focus is to ensure that attendees can enjoy this important cultural event safely, reliably, and without preventable electrical service interruptions.
In the weeks leading up to the festival, LUMA’s team carried out planned upgrades to the electrical system in Old San Juan, including repairs to critical hot spots identified in the area to optimize service reliability. Additionally, streetlights near San Sebastián Street were inspected and repaired to enhance visibility and ensure safety during the nighttime festivities.
“The electrical system in Old San Juan is both complex and challenging to work on, as it is located within historic structures of significant value”, explained José Pérez, director of External Affairs.
As part of its preparation, LUMA has developed a comprehensive response plan to address any issues that may arise during the festival. The plan includes:
- Strategically Positioned Crews: Teams will be stationed at key locations in Old San Juan, ready to respond quickly and safely in the event of emergencies.
- Coordination with Authorities: Discussions with the Autonomous Municipality of San Juan and the Puerto Rico Police Bureau have been ongoing for weeks to ensure attendee safety and pre-coordinate any necessary repairs during the festival in a timely and safe manner.

Stay away from the work being done by our crews during the event. Lines on the ground are dangerous, always assume they are energized and stay away. Do not approach or touch the gray or green boxes that regulate the underground electrical system, it is considered dangerous equipment.
