The initiative strengthens the municipal response capacity to electrical emergencies prior to the hurricane season
Vega Alta, PR – May 20, 2026 – In order to strengthen emergency preparedness and in compliance with its commitment to safety, LUMA carried out specialized training in electrical safety aimed at first responders and employees of the Municipality of Vega Alta.
During the training, participants received practical guidance on how to safely respond to incidents involving energized lines, damaged infrastructure, and atmospheric emergencies. The LUMA team offered demonstrations on preventive measures, communication protocols, and procedures to reduce risks during critical situations. The activity coincided with Electrical Safety Month, a period in which LUMA intensifies its educational initiatives to promote prevention and reinforce the culture of safety throughout Puerto Rico.
“Each municipality faces particular challenges when emergencies occur. That’s why it’s critical that those on the front lines of response have the tools they need to handle electrical incidents safely and confidently,” said José Costa, Corporate Performance Manager for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE). Costa, who began his career as a field worker and has more than two decades of experience in Puerto Rico’s electrical system, stressed that this type of training is key to strengthening community resilience.
As part of the training, municipal employees participated in interactive exercises, analysis of real situations and discussion spaces to clarify doubts and reinforce good practices. The training will allow participants to receive continuing education hours validated by the Office of Government Ethics.
With this effort, LUMA reaffirms its commitment to community safety and preparedness, strengthening partnerships with municipalities around Puerto Rico and promoting a preventive culture aimed at saving lives.
