Scheduled work on Saturday, April 11, will benefit more than 13,000 customers
San Juan, Puerto Rico – April 9, 2026 – With the goal of reinforcing the electrical infrastructure and continuing to improve service reliability, LUMA will carry out upgrade work at the Boquerón Substation in Cabo Rojo and on transmission line 13400 this coming Saturday, April 11, benefiting more than 13,000 customers in the western region.
The work at the substation, which will require a temporary service interruption, includes replacing metal beams that serve as the structural base for critical equipment, as well as the entrance of the 38 kV line.
These upgrades will strengthen the safety and stability of the infrastructure, especially ahead of the upcoming hurricane season, by replacing components that have reached the end of their useful life, including beams, power transformer connections, and equipment that allows us to monitor the voltage delivered to customers and ensure it remains at a correct and safe level.
Simultaneously, work will be conducted on transmission line 13400, where insulators will be replaced, a new ABC-type operator will be installed, a safer and more resilient electrical cable, and sections of line that are no longer in service will be removed. These improvements will be carried out along approximately 10,000 feet of the line. These actions will help increase system reliability, reduce the frequency of outages, and speed up service restoration in the event of an interruption.
“These projects are key to continuing to strengthen the electrical system and better preparing for weather events. We know that any scheduled interruption requires adjustments from our customers, and we appreciate their understanding as we carry out the necessary upgrades that will allow us to provide more reliable and resilient service,” said Jusino Ocasio, Substation Supervisor for the western region.
LUMA encourages impacted customers to take the necessary steps to minimize inconveniences during the interruption period. Crews will be working continuously to complete the upgrades as quickly as possible and safely restore service.
