RESTORATION UPDATE: 93% OF CUSTOMERS RESTORED ACROSS THE ISLAND
San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 3, 2022 – Today, LUMA teams continued to focus on restoration efforts in the hardest hit areas of Ponce and Mayagüez, with LUMA crews working to restore power and make critical repairs to damaged infrastructure. In addition, LUMA expressed gratitude to President Biden and all the federal agencies, including FEMA and the U.S. Department of Energy for their continued federal cooperation, support and the importance they have placed on helping Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Fiona.
“We want to thank President Biden for his continued support in the recovery and restoration of Puerto Rico. Hurricane Fiona brought significant damage to the island – including damage to over 50% of the electric system, and the support and cooperation we have received from the Biden Administration, and our local Puerto Rican agencies has been critical to our ongoing restoration efforts. Because of that support and cooperation, in less than two weeks, over 90% of all LUMA customers have been restored, whereas customers went without power for nearly a year or more after Hurricane Maria,” said LUMA Engineer Daniel Hernández, “LUMA and its partners will not stop until all customers across Puerto Rico have been restored.”
Current Restoration Updates
LUMA announced that as of 10:00 AM it has restored electric service to over 1.36 million customers, or 93% of total customers. Given the severity of damage in the hardest hit regions, LUMA continues to prioritize western and southern areas of the island and is mobilizing more utility field crews to perform critical repairs.
