LUMA Strengthens Service Reliability with Upgrades at Aguada Substation

Among other benefits, the upgrades will enable early detection of irregularities and rapid action to protect the system

Aguada, Puerto Rico – June 27, 2025 – As part of its commitment to modernizing the electric grid and enhancing service stability, LUMA has completed a series of key upgrades at the Aguada substation, benefiting over 8,000 customers in the western region.

Among the improvements, LUMA repaired two motor-operated devices (MODs), which allow for the remote opening and closing of auxiliary equipment. This update strengthens the electric system by restoring the link between two 38 kV transmission lines—one from Aguadilla and the other from Mayagüez. Thanks to this remote transfer capability, if one of the lines experiences a fault, the load can be redirected, and power supply can continue without interruption.

In addition, a power transformer (PT), a critical component used to monitor the status of the transmission line, was replaced. This device helps detect voltage irregularities early, enabling swift action to protect the system and prevent service disruptions.

“With these actions, we continue to strengthen system stability in the western region and improve our response capability to unplanned events. These upgrades are part of a broader effort to deliver more reliable and robust service to our customers,” said Justino Ocasio López, LUMA’s Western Substation Supervisor.

These efforts follow recent improvements at the same substation, including the repair of a circuit breaker that had been connected to another unit and could not operate independently. The repair now allows it to function on its own, helping the system operate more efficiently and improving service quality for customers.
