Improvements in San Juan and Rio Grande strengthen system reliability and reduce risk of breakdowns
San Juan, Puerto Rico – March 3, 2026– LUMA continues a series of strategic maintenance and modernization works in the San Juan and Rio Grande regions as part of its preparedness plan to safely and reliably support two international sporting events to be held in March: the Puerto Rico Open and the World Baseball Classic.
In the eastern region, LUMA completed an intensive agenda of work on line 3,100, critical infrastructure that serves the Rio Grande area, where the Puerto Rico Open is being held. Among the improvements made are:
- Replacement of insulation and hardware to strengthen the stability of the system.
- Correction of hot spots identified in thermal inspections.
- Repair of five main circuit breakers that were not working, to improve circuit protection.
- Additional preventive maintenance to reduce the risk of failure during the event.
These interventions reduce the possibility of interruptions and improve response times, benefiting communities, businesses, and the area where the tournament is held.
In San Juan, as part of the preparations for the World Baseball Classic, LUMA carried out reinforcement and evaluation work on the infrastructure that serves the Hiram Bithorn Stadium area. These efforts include:
- Inspections and repairs in the underground system to address breakdowns identified in the area.
- Ongoing coordination with the Municipality of San Juan to ensure operational alignment and rapid response during the event.
As part of its preparedness strategy, LUMA also activated its Incident Command System (ICS) structure and established dedicated Incident Management Teams (IMT) for both events. These specialized teams facilitate real-time coordination, streamline decision-making, and strengthen internal and external communication processes, ensuring an efficient and well-organized response before, during, and after each event.
In addition, LUMA has reinforced the preventive inspection, the coordination of service brigades and the operational adjustments necessary to respond with agility during the days of the event.
With these efforts, LUMA reaffirms its commitment to strengthen the resilience of the electric system, minimize unexpected interruptions, and ensure reliable service while holding sporting events of high importance to Puerto Rico.
