LUMA Restores Power To All Customers Following Transmission Outages

San Juan, Puerto Rico, August 17, 2022 – As of 6:31 PM, Wednesday, August 17, LUMA crews have restored power to all customers affected by outages in Bayamon, Carolina, Caguas and San Juan caused by multiple transmission line disturbances.

LUMA cited adverse weather conditions, the fragility of the system and ongoing and persistent issues with the availability of sufficient generation provided by PREPA especially at Aguirre facility and others, as key challenges crews overcame as part of the effort to restore power to all customers impacted.

During efforts to restore power to customers as quickly and safely as possible, the following actions were taken:

Key Restoration Actions

·      Mobilized and activated LUMA Emergency Operation Center

·      Prioritized restoration of critical facilities including San Jorge Children’s and Women’s Hospital, the Professional Hospital of Guaynabo and PREMB facilities.

·      Mobilized several large transmission line crews

·      Mobilized helicopter crews for emergency line patrols

·      Mobilized vegetation management crews

·      Mobilized substation crews to Cambalache, Manatí, Costa Sur, Aguirre and Yabucoa

·      Patrolled transmission lines

·      Repaired substation breakers

·      Repaired jumpers

·      Repaired conductors

·      Sending notification to customers via MiLUMA for the first time

·      Coordinated with agency partners including FEMA, Department of Public Safety and PREMB, ES12, and Department of Homeland Security as well as other government agencies

·      FEMA deployed liaison officer to LUMA Emergency Operation Center

·      Mobilized key account teams to communicate with municipalities and key customers
