LUMA RESTORES POWER TO 1.46 MILLION CUSTOMERS & BEGINS PROCESS OF DEMOBILIZING EMERGENCY POSTURE

TARGETED POWER RESTORATION EFFORTS IN MOST HEAVILY DAMAGED REGIONS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL EVERY CUSTOMER’S POWER IS RESTORED

San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 14, 2022 – Today, LUMA announced that it has restored electric service to 1.46 million customers, representing 99% of total customers across the island following Category 1 Hurricane Fiona.  Given the level of restoration, LUMA will continue targeted restoration efforts while it begins the process of demobilizing its emergency operations and transitioning to normal day-to-day operations.

As part of LUMA’s demobilization, the LUMA Emergency Operations Center (LEOC) and emergency operations will transition to normal outage response and reporting. In addition, LUMA will continue targeted restoration efforts in the Mayagüez and Ponce service regions, which were most heavily impacted by Hurricane Fiona, and will not stop until every last customer has been restored. As part of the transition away from emergency operations, customers that experience an outage are encouraged to contact 1-844-888-5862 (LUMA) or report using the Mi LUMA Web and mobile apps.

“LUMA teams have made historic progress in responding to Hurricane Fiona and as of today have restored service to over 1.46 million customers, representing 99% of all customers. As we now begin to transition away from emergency operations, we will continue our targeted restoration work in the hardest hit areas of Puerto Rico with a laser focus on responding to any outage across the system,” said LUMA Engineer Daniel Hernández.

Current Restoration Updates – Specific Service Regions

As of 8:00 AM, LUMA has restored electric service to 99% of total customers. In terms of specific service regions, LUMA has restored service to:

  • 100% of customers in San Juan, Bayamón, Caguas and Arecibo
  • 99% of customers in the service region of Ponce
  • 98% of customers in the service region of Mayagüez

LUMA has also fully restored service to 100% of hospitals, and PRASA water facilities.

Targeted Restoration Efforts in Hardest Hit Areas

As LUMA demobilizes its island-wide emergency operations and transitions back to normal operations, the Regional Operations Command Centers (ROCCs) in both the Mayagüez and Ponce service regions will remain mobilized and will continue to coordinate restoration efforts and resources until all power is restored.

As evidenced by photographic evidence and over 6,000 completed damage assessments, critical parts of the electric grid and generation facilities in these two regions were severely damaged. LUMA crews are continuing to make progress restoring power despite ongoing local weather challenges, difficult terrain, as well as roads washed away from Hurricane Fiona. Current work being performed in these areas includes clearing vegetation from and around distribution feeders, repairing damaged conductors and reenergizing lines. To accomplish this work in challenging terrain, LUMA crews are also utilizing helicopters where possible to bring crews and equipment in to repair damaged electric infrastructure.

Ponce Service Region Updates – October 14, 2022

  • 99% of customers restored
  • 170 distribution feeders fully or partially energized to date
  • Restoration work continues today on 13 distribution feeders to restore service to remaining customers

Mayagüez Service Region Updates – October 14, 2022

  • 98% of customers restored
  • 165 distribution feeders fully or partially energized to date
  • Restoration work continues today on 28 distribution feeders to restore service to remaining customers

Transitioning to Normal Operations – Factors that Impact Future Outages

As part of the transition to normal operations customers whose power has been restored may still experience day-to-day service interruptions because of weather, lack of generation, ongoing repairs to the electric grid, or other factors. It is important to note that these day-to-day service interruptions are not reflected in the customer restoration numbers that LUMA has disclosed daily following Hurricane Fiona.  Customers who experience a service interruption are encouraged to call 1-844-888-5862 (LUMA).
