LUMA continues to prioritize repairs of critical electric infrastructure in hardest hit regions of Ponce and Mayagüez until every customer is restored
San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 1, 2022 – Today, LUMA announced that it has restored electric service to over 1.3 million customers, or 90% of total customers, meeting LUMA’s global restoration targets of 77% to 91% power restored that was announced on Sunday, September 25, 2022. Given the severity of damage in the hardest hit regions, LUMA utility crews continue to perform critical repairs, conduct damage assessments, deploy resources and coordinate with local and federal partners to restore power for customers across the western and southern areas of the island. LUMA is on track to meet its estimated restoration timeframe of October 4-6 for the areas of Ponce and Mayagüez – the areas that suffered the most damage, including severe flooding and damage to local roads, bridges and electric infrastructure.
“While our 3,000-strong LUMA team, including nearly 2,000 field utility crews, have successfully restored electric service to 90% of our customers across Puerto Rico, we are just as determined to restore power to those areas hardest hit by Hurricane Fiona. We continue to work around the clock alongside PREPA and all our local and federal partners in our response efforts to ensure that every customer, especially those in the hardest hit regions of Ponce and Mayagüez, have power as quickly and safely as possible. We want to be very clear, we will not stop until every single customer has been restored,” said LUMA Engineer Daniel Hernández.
Hurricane Fiona severely impacted critical parts of the electric grid and generation facilities across Puerto Rico, especially in the Ponce and Mayagüez regions that suffered severe damage to critical infrastructure. LUMA has over 700 utility field workers in the Mayagüez and Ponce areas to conduct repairs and support restoration efforts in these two hardest hit regions. LUMA teams are also reaching out to coordinate with local mayors and officials to address their concerns as we continue our critical restoration efforts in Mayagüez and Ponce areas.
