Dorado, Puerto Rico – September 3, 2025 – Following an aerial inspection by helicopter, LUMA crews are working on the installation of fiber optic cable along transmission line 37400, which runs through the municipalities of Manatí, Vega Baja, Vega Alta, Toa Baja, and Bayamón—benefiting over 100,000 customers in the northern region.
As part of this effort to install 38,000 feet of telecommunications fiber optic cable directly onto the electric grid, the transmission and distribution company conducted a thermographic study that identified hot spots on the lines—areas where connections heat up more than normal and could pose a risk to system operations. These will be repaired as part of the project.
This fiber optic connection will enhance communication between substations, improve control and monitoring of the telecommunications system, and increase the resilience of the electric grid. It will also help protect the system by enabling protective devices to respond more effectively and minimize service interruptions.
“The integration of fiber optic cable into line 37,400 represents a major step in modernizing the grid. We’re not only strengthening the reliability of electric service, but also opening the door to new communication capabilities that benefit Puerto Rico,” said Engineer Hamilton Lugo, Director of Transmission Line Operations, who noted that the project is funded through operational funds.
These efforts are part of LUMA’s ongoing reconstruction and transformation projects across the island, aimed at strengthening critical infrastructure and improving the system’s emergency response. However, LUMA has repeatedly emphasized that continuing these critical initiatives depends on having the necessary funds in the appropriate accounts to maintain the pace of work and the transformation of Puerto Rico’s electric grid.
