On-site brigades, expanded monitoring and electrical safety measures will support competitions and celebrations in Mayagüez
Mayagüez, PR – May 1, 2026 – In anticipation of the busiest day of the Interuniversity Athletic League (LAI) Sports Festival, LUMA announced the implementation of a reinforced preparedness and response plan to support the competitions and celebrations that culminate on May 2 in the municipality of Mayagüez. This plan includes preventive work, an expanded presence of brigades in the area and intensive monitoring of the electricity grid.
As part of the preventive actions, LUMA carried out patrols and maintenance on essential feeders that serve the main sports venues, clearing vegetation to reduce the risk of interruptions and reviewing luminaires in areas of high pedestrian and commercial activity. These measures seek to strengthen the reliability of the system during the high flow of visitors and simultaneous events.
To manage the event, LUMA activated its Incident Command Center, which operates with rotating shifts throughout the day to ensure continuous attention. Additionally, brigades are present at strategic points until 11:00 p.m. to respond immediately to any incident that may arise during competitions or night celebrations. The Distribution Operation Center (DOC) also strengthened its network surveillance, significantly expanding monitoring to detect anomalies more quickly.
During the festival period, LUMA has been in close communication with the Municipality of Mayagüez, the Municipal Office for Emergency Management, and participating universities, ensuring the necessary coordination to attend to the large number of activities on closing day.
“Is one of the busiest days of the entire event, and our commitment is to ensure that residents, students and visitors can enjoy the competitions and celebrations with reliable service. We have strengthened our presence and are prepared to respond with agility,” said Carlos Muñiz Lasalle, Regional Manager of Lines at LUMA.
LUMA urged all attendees to follow basic electrical safety measures during the event:
- Stay away from poles, power lines, and grid equipment, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Do not touch or move downed or loose wires.
- Avoid placing or installing decorative objects near electrical infrastructure.
- Report any unusual or potentially dangerous situations to the event authorities or by calling 1-844-888-5862.
The company stressed that these recommendations contribute to everyone’s safety on a busy day in the city.
LUMA reaffirmed that it will continue to provide operational support throughout the closing of the Justas LAI, maintaining preventive measures in future events throughout the island.
