LUMA rehabilitates infrastructure affected by Hurricane María to strengthen the stability of electric service in Canóvanas and Río Grande

The work will benefit over 3,300 customers and reinforce service for critical loads, including water pumps.

Canóvanas, Puerto Rico – May 26, 2026 – LUMA continues implementing initiatives to strengthen the reliability and redundancy of the electric system in the eastern region by rehabilitating electrical infrastructure that had remained out of service since Hurricane María. The project consists of reestablishing an electrical connection between the Canóvanas and Río Grande substations, which will provide an alternative service path for thousands of customers in the event of outages or failures in one of the main lines.

“These efforts allow us to recover an important connection between two feeders from different substations that were taken out of service after Hurricane María. Completing this rehabilitation will enable us to transfer service from one substation to another when an interruption occurs, helping reduce customer impact and strengthening system stability,” explained Juan Oyola, regional manager for the San Juan region at LUMA.

The improvement will directly benefit more than 3,300 customers in Canóvanas and Río Grande, including critical installations such as Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA) pumping stations essential for water service in the area.

As part of the first phase of this project, LUMA crews completed preparation work on 10 existing poles, including the installation of new equipment and components that will support nearly 1,200 feet of new electrical cable.

“This project is not about building a new line, but rather rehabilitating existing infrastructure that had been out of service for years. With this work, we will strengthen the system’s ability to respond more flexibly and reduce both the duration and number of customers affected during outages,” added Oyola, who has 31 years of experience in the electrical system.

The second phase of the project will include additional work on another seven poles and the installation of approximately 1,350 additional feet of electrical cable, for a total of about 2,500 feet of rehabilitated cable as part of the full project.

With initiatives like this, LUMA continues advancing projects focused on strengthening the resilience, flexibility, and reliability of the electric system for the benefit of communities across Puerto Rico.
