LUMA Rebuilds Transmission Line in Humacao Out of Service Since Hurricane Maria

Reconstruction of this line will improve service reliability in the east and the island municipalities

Humacao, Puerto Rico – September 10, 2025 – As part of the ongoing efforts to transform Puerto Rico’s electric system, LUMA is working on the reconstruction of transmission line 12,600, which connects the Naguabo TC substation with the Verde Mar substation in Humacao and has been out of service since Hurricane Maria.

This line is essential for providing redundancy to the electric system that serves more than 25,000 customers in Naguabo, Humacao, Vieques, and Culebra. Currently, customers in Humacao rely solely on line 5400—which also supplies Vieques and Culebra—for service, increasing the risk of outages. Once line 12,600 is back in service, the frequency of interruptions will be significantly reduced, improving system reliability in the region.

The work includes replacing insulators and hardware on the 110 poles along the line. Additionally, approximately 30,000 feet of electrical material is being installed on 30 poles to complete the line. Around 40 employees are participating in this project, working safely and continuously to complete it by the end of October.

“With this reconstruction, we are restoring redundancy and strength to a line that has been out of service for years, directly benefiting thousands of families and businesses in Naguabo, Humacao, Vieques, and Culebra. This project is part of our commitment to transform the electric system and minimize the outages that affect our customers,” said Engineer Hamilton Lugo, Director of Transmission Line Operations, who noted that the project is funded through operational funds and emphasized the importance of having the necessary resources to carry out projects like this.

These efforts are part of an ongoing plan that prioritizes the safety, reliability, and resilience of Puerto Rico’s electric system and demonstrate that transforming an outdated and fragile system requires the right resources to achieve meaningful progress in service quality.
