Meanwhile, in Moca, substation improvements are completed to benefit more than 5,000 customers
Arecibo, Puerto Rico – November 12, 2025 – As part of its commitment to stabilizing the electric system, LUMA is advancing the rehabilitation of transmission line 2100 in Arecibo, a critical infrastructure that has been out of service since Hurricane Maria in 2017. This line connects the municipalities of Arecibo and Quebradillas, extending from the Dos Bocas hydroelectric plant to the Charco Hondo substation.
“The rehabilitation of this line, which will benefit over 1,800 customers, is characterized by its difficult access and is essential to improve the reliability of the service in the northern region, since it will provide greater redundancy to several key substations in the area,” explained Eng. Hamilton Lugo, Director of Transmission Line Operations at LUMA, who has more than 28 years of experience in Puerto Rico’s electrical system.
On the other hand, LUMA completed essential work at the Moca substation, replacing critical feeder components. These works will improve the reliability of the service for more than 5,000 residential and commercial customers in the municipality.
In addition to the replacement of the bar disconnects, corrective work was carried out on a transmission line, where previously identified hot spots were attended to with a thermographic camera. This proactive intervention seeks to prevent future interruptions and optimize the performance of the electrical infrastructure in the area.
The sectors that will benefit from these improvements include communities such as the urban area of Moca, Lomas Verdes, Moca Gardens, Monte Verde Hills and dozens of additional sectors that depend on this substation for their daily service.
“These tasks are part of a coordinated effort to attend to the electrical infrastructure. By integrating multiple jobs into a single operation, we reduce the need for future outages and move towards a more robust and reliable network,” said Juan Nieves, regional substation manager.
These works are part of a maintenance plan focused on the stabilization of substations and transmission lines. For this reason, it is necessary to have the funds available in the accounts assigned to the maintenance of the transmission and distribution system, to ensure the continuity and development of the work.
