Culebra, Puerto Rico, October 15, 2021 – LUMA staff connected the first and only electric power distribution connection to Villa Muñeco community in Culebra. This community consists of approximately one hundred plots of land that were distributed to people back in 1999. This marks a great precedent in the electric service in Culebra and was possible by a meeting and later an agreement made in September 2021 between LUMA and the Mayor of Culebra Edilberto “Junito” Romero.
The twenty families who live in Villa Muñeco have always used portable generators or in the best of cases some solar panels with batteries to have power in their homes. From Friday onwards they will have connection to the electrical transmission and distribution system operated by LUMA. “With this connection finally the owners of the plots of land will be able to obtain construction permits to develop their homes,” said Romero.
“Thankful for the meeting with LUMA personnel because LUMA has given 100 percent of their efforts to energize the plots of land, without their help we would not have been able to energize the plots and I am grateful of LUMA, the municipality and the Villa Muñeco community because they will have an essential service resulting in having better quality of life” said mayor Romero.
LUMA celebrates that this connection has been done in record time.
“Every day LUMA is pleased to make things easier for our customers, in this case it all started with a meeting a month ago and today we are seeing positive results for the residents of this community in Culebra,” said Todd McLaren, Senior Vice-president of Operations at LUMA.
