LUMA Projects Expand Electric System Capacity to Foster Economic Development in Ponce

The initiative strengthens the grid and enables new growth opportunities in the southern region

Ponce, PR – March 20, 2026 – As part of ongoing efforts to support the development of new communities and commercial activity in the southern region, LUMA announced that it is carrying out electrical infrastructure projects in the municipality of Ponce aimed at expanding capacity and strengthening system resilience to benefit more than 10,300 customers in the municipality.

“These types of initiatives are part of LUMA’s strategic planning to ensure that the electrical infrastructure supports the growth of new communities and commercial developments throughout Puerto Rico. By strengthening the system’s capacity and redundancy, these projects make responsible development possible and directly contribute to the economic progress of the region,” said engineer Ferdinand Cardona, LUMA’s Director of Energy Distribution and Compliance.

This project is key to enabling the connection of new residential developments, communities, and commercial projects that previously could not be integrated into the electrical system due to redundancy and capacity limitations. Among the communities and areas that will directly benefit from these improvements are: Urb. Brisas del Laurel, Urb. Hacienda Juliana, Laurel del Sur, Estancias del Laurel, Villas del Laurel, Santa América, Complejo Veredas del Laurel, Urb. Haciendas del Monte, Urb. Mansiones de Ponce, Complejo Portales del Monte, Urb. El Monte 4ta Extensión, Plaza San Cristóbal, as well as expanding commercial developments throughout the region.

The main objective will be to connect a new line that will establish a backup link between the feeder extending from La Rambla TC in Ponce and the feeder originating from the Coto Laurel substation. This interconnection will provide greater redundancy to the electrical system, reduce the risk of outages, and allow for increased service stability—something essential for the sustained development of communities and economic activity in the region. In addition, crews will perform vegetation removal near power lines as part of a comprehensive preventive maintenance approach. Work is expected to be completed by the end of May of this year.

As part of the project, crews are working on extending a 13,000-volt feeder, installing more than 20 poles designed to withstand winds of up to 160 miles per hour. The project also includes the construction of an underground segment to connect it to the area’s overhead system. This component will significantly increase load transfer capacity between the two feeders, improving the system’s operational flexibility and reducing the risk of prolonged outages.

“This project is an important step toward strengthening the capacity of the electrical system in the southern region and enabling the development of new communities and commercial projects that previously could not be connected. By increasing the system’s redundancy and reliability, we are also creating the necessary conditions to drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for our customers,” Cardona emphasized.
