The piece, produced by Puerto Rican talent, compiles historical information documented and narrated by experts, employees, and technical voices who are closely familiar with the ongoing transformation and the socioeconomic context of Puerto Rico
San Juan, Puerto Rico, May 18, 2025 —LUMA, the company dedicated to the operation of the electrical transmission and distribution system in Puerto Rico, will premiere today at 7:30 p.m., the documentary A la Luz de la Verdad (In the Light of Truth), a production carried out by Puerto Rican talent that aims to inform through expert voices about the real challenges Puerto Rico is facing, the progress achieved, and the upcoming efforts needed to transform the electrical grid.
“The decision to create this documentary arises from the need to place Puerto Rico’s electrical system in its historical context. Information is consumed quickly; we aim to pause time to take a closer look at the current landscape, listen more deeply, and understand the multiple layers that shape our reality today. It is important to recognize and bring to light what we have accomplished since we arrived in 2021, the real challenges Puerto Rico is facing, and the upcoming efforts required to achieve the system transformation we all hope for and deserve. This documentary was produced by Puerto Rican talent and funded with private resources, at no cost to our customers,” said Juan Saca, President and Chief Executive Officer of LUMA.
The special broadcast, which will air simultaneously on Telemundo, TeleOnce, Canal 13, NotiUno.com, and digital media, includes testimonies from analysts, energy sector experts, technicians, and LUMA workers.
“This documentary stems from our commitment and an important principle: transparency with the people. At a time when critical decisions about the electrical system are being discussed, the country needs to have access to complete and direct information in spaces for reflection that go beyond the screen. We also honor the work of the 4,500 men and women proudly committed to building a more resilient, stronger, and above all, brighter electrical grid for this and future generations,” added the executive.
A la Luz de la Verdad seeks to open a window into what happens behind the scenes in the reconstruction of the energy system, showcasing the human work that positively impacts all 78 municipalities of the island daily. The documentary presents a clear snapshot of the complex transformation process, showing accomplishments, data, and concrete before-and-after examples. LUMA’s parent companies funded the piece without using the budget allocated to local operations.
Documentary filmmaker Jean Paul Polo, who led the production, emphasized the importance of transparency in making the documentary. “As a filmmaker and creative, my passion is to tell stories that impact Puerto Ricans’ lives. Always committed to transparency, without taking sides or assuming positions, but focused on shedding light and bringing clarity. This documentary has been no exception. I am aware of the energy crisis Puerto Rico is facing, as we are all affected by it, and that is why my team, and I placed special emphasis on approaching this documentary with transparency and respect our people deserve.”
Polo, owner of the production company Wanabí Puerto Rico, has over 14 years of experience in production and has received Cannes Lions and Emmy awards—recognitions for excellence in creative communication, advertising, and television, respectively.
“We worked to ensure that A la Luz de la Verdad would be a piece where all relevant voices were heard—from frontline employees to independent experts—to achieve a fair and accurate representation of the current circumstances. I understand this topic is sensitive and full of nuance. That is why my responsibility as a storyteller has been to provide a broad context that allows viewers to understand the magnitude and complexity of the energy challenges in Puerto Rico. I believe that when people are informed, they are empowered and can form their opinions based on all the facts. That is what this project is about: providing people with clear and transparent information,” said Polo.
