Adjuntas, Puerto Rico – December 2, 2025 – As part of its commitment to strengthening electric service in central island communities, LUMA announced the start of proactive work at the Yahuecas substation in Adjuntas to replace a critical transformer that has been in operation for over 70 years. This project will directly benefit more than 10,000 customers in the central region.
These efforts are part of LUMA’s Preventive and Corrective Maintenance Plan for substations being carried out across the Island. To begin the transformer replacement, a portable substation must first be installed, allowing work to proceed while keeping customers in service. Some customers may experience temporary service interruptions during the connection of the portable unit. The work will take place from Tuesday, December 2, through Saturday, December 6, as a preventive measure to minimize future service interruptions during the equipment replacement.
“The current transformer is estimated to be around 70 years old, which is more than double its recommended service life,” said Hendzon Martínez, LUMA’s Director of Substations, who has over 22 years of experience in the electric system. “Due to its age and lack of maintenance, this equipment will be replaced with one of greater capacity. This upgrade is essential to improve the reliability of electric service in the central region of the island,” Martínez added.
As part of the project, a new transformer will be installed to strengthen the operation of the 38,000-volt Line 8100, which serves areas of Adjuntas, Lares, Las Marías, and Maricao. Line 1400, also 38,000 volts, will also benefit from this project, having already undergone improvements as part of LUMA’s plans to stabilize the island’s electric system.
Substation Work Schedule:
The work will require scheduled service interruptions for approximately 2,300 customers in Adjuntas and nearby communities, according to the following schedule:
- Tuesday, December 2: Work will begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue until approximately 7:30 p.m. to install the portable substation, allowing the disconnection of the existing transformer to begin.
- Friday, December 5: Starting at 6:00 a.m., the removal of the existing transformer and installation of the new equipment is expected to take 18 to 20 hours.
- Saturday, December 6: From 8:00 a.m. to approximately 4:00 p.m., the portable substation will be connected to the 38kV line. Additional work will continue in the following weeks.
LUMA urges customers to prepare for these scheduled interruptions and assures that crews will work continuously throughout December and early January to complete the transformer replacement.
Once the project is completed, thousands of customers will benefit from increased capacity to meet electric demand in the area, improved voltage stability in the region, and a stronger system serving Adjuntas and surrounding municipalities.
These efforts have been coordinated with local municipalities to ensure efficient execution and minimize impact. Despite current challenges, continued improvements like this require the necessary funding in the appropriate transmission and distribution system accounts.
