November 25, 2024 – San Juan, Puerto Rico – LUMA has launched its “Shine Safely” holiday campaign alongside an expanded In-Store Discount Program to promote electrical safety, energy efficiency, and sustainability during the festive season. These initiatives align with LUMA’s mission to empower customers to make smart energy decisions while supporting a more sustainable and resilient energy future for Puerto Rico.

Holiday Safety and Energy Efficiency Tips

As part of the campaign, LUMA encourages customers to follow these tips to ensure a safe and energy-efficient holiday season:

                1.           Avoid placing decorations near powerlines: Keep decorations at least 10 feet away from powerlines.

                2.           Do not overload outlets: Distribute plugged devices evenly across outlets to prevent hazards.

                3.           Use UL-certified lights and decorations: Ensure all decorations meet safety standards.

                4.           Switch to LED lights: LED lights are more energy-efficient, last longer, and reduce electricity costs.

                5.           Set timers: Use timers to automatically turn off lights and decorations overnight or when not at home.

                6.           Use GFCI-protected outlets: Connect outdoor lights to ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets for enhanced safety.

In-Store Discount Program: Instant Savings for Energy Efficiency

During the holiday season, LUMA is also spotlighting its In-Store Discount Program, which provides customers with instant savings on energy-efficient products at participating retailers such as Home Depot and Walmart.

Key Features:

                •             Instant discounts at checkout for eligible ENERGY STAR-certified products.

                •             Current eligible items include LED lighting, window AC units, and ceiling fans.

                •             In 2025, the program will expand to include ENERGY STAR-certified washers and dryers.

Impact to Date:

                •             50,000+ products sold since July 2024.

                •             Nearly $200,000 in customer savings, primarily on LED lighting.

                •             Expanded opportunities for customers to save on utility bills while reducing energy consumption.

LUMA also encourages customers to consider energy-efficient products as thoughtful and environmentally friendly holiday gifts. ENERGY STAR-certified appliances, LED light sets, and smart home devices are practical options that promote sustainability and help reduce energy consumption year-round. “This program not only helps reduce energy costs but also supports our broader mission to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact,” said Noriette Figueroa, Vice President of Customer Service at LUMA.

The “Shine Safely & Efficiently” campaign and the In-Store Discount Program are part of LUMA’s broader strategy to promote energy efficiency across Puerto Rico. In 2024, LUMA launched several impactful initiatives:

                •             Rebates for energy-efficient equipment: Incentives designed to encourage residential and commercial customers to adopt energy-efficient appliances. Due to its overwhelming success, the mini split rebate program has reached full subscription and is temporarily suspended.

                •             Energy efficiency kits: Distributed to raise awareness and encourage smarter energy practices.
