LUMA is Working to Support Puerto Rico’s EV Future

Company to participate in EV workshop hosted by the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 27, 2022 – Today, representatives of LUMA will participate in the second workshop hosted by the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) to discuss the future of electric vehicles (EVs) and its role in building a cleaner energy future that will help advance and empower EV adoption across Puerto Rico.

“Whether it is determining how to build necessary EV infrastructure or addressing how to best ensure overall grid reliability, this is an important discussion, and we are excited to work together with our customers, community leaders and our regulators to help define this promising EV future,” said LUMA Chief Executive Officer Wayne Stensby.

In just seven months, LUMA has already taken significant steps to support the future adoption of electric vehicles. The company has made improvements to the energy grid to improve day-to-day reliability of the system and will, over the coming years make additional upgrades to the grid that will further support cleaner energy and the adoption of electric vehicles. As noted in the company’s November 2021 report to the PREB, LUMA is working to:

  • Increase interconnection of renewables and battery storage by streamlining the process for customers;
  • Repair and modernize the grid to ensure reliable power to support the electric vehicle transition; and
  • Advance procurement of utility-scale renewable energy and storage to help ensure future EVs are charged by cleaner energy.

“By working together, we believe we can and will support the growth of EVs and build a cleaner energy future that our Puerto Rican customers expect and deserve, and today’s EV workshop is an important part of this effort,” Stensby said.
