The LUMA Emergency Operations Center will be active during the general elections, with crews proactively mobilized in all regions to ensure an effective response
(San Juan, November 1, 2024) – As part of its updates ahead of the general elections, LUMA emphasized that the plan developed months ago in coordination with the State Commission on Elections (CEE, in Spanish) includes the activation of the LUMA Emergency Operations Center and the mobilization of crews in all regions to ensure rapid and effective response coordination, should the need arise.
The Director of External Affairs of LUMA, José Pérez Vélez, stressed the importance of keeping the public informed. “Starting Monday, our operations center will be active, and our crews will be stationed in different regions to monitor, address, and manage all the essential components to anticipate any eventuality,” Pérez Vélez said.
He added, “After LUMA provided the CEE with assessments of all of the planned sites, CEE decided to use generators in about 40 voting centers that are not connected to the electrical grid.”
LUMA assessed whether the voting centers have meters and other key equipment that meet applicable standards, the overall functionality of the facilities, and electrical safety risks.
“We have worked closely with the CEE to prepare several months before this important event and we are ready to respond to any situation that may arise on election day. We remain committed to responding effectively and safely,” said Pérez Vélez.
As part of the plan, no scheduled upgrades requiring temporary outages will occur on November 4, 5, and 6. In addition, LUMA personnel will be stationed at the CEE central office to act as a liaison between the two entities.
