LUMA Installs New Transformer at Caguas Substation to Strengthen Power Grid Resilience in Puerto Rico’s Central Region

Upgrade will benefit approximately 70,000 customers and is part of the systemwide Substation Stabilization Program, which also includes improvements in Sabana Llana and Monacillos

San Juan, Puerto Rico — November 26, 2025 — As part of its ongoing efforts to stabilize and modernize Puerto Rico’s electric system, LUMA has completed the installation of a new 115-kilovolt (kV) to 38-kilovolt transformer with a capacity of 112 MVA (megavolt-amperes) at the Caguas Substation. This major system improvement will strengthen reliability and resilience across Puerto Rico’s central region.

The installation of this new transformer will benefit approximately 70,000 customers across the municipalities of Caguas, Juncos, and Cayey by enhancing the system’s ability to respond to voltage fluctuations, weather impacts, and potential equipment failures in nearby facilities.

“The replacement and installation of new transformers like this one are essential steps in continuing to strengthen the electric system and ensuring a more stable and reliable service for our customers,” said Pedro Meléndez, Chief Capital Programs and Grid Transformation Officer. “This work is part of LUMA’s commitment to modernizing and improving the operational safety of our substations across the island.”

This new transformer increases the energy transfer capacity between neighboring substations and supports more efficient and secure system operations in the region. The upgrade is part of LUMA’s broader Substation Stabilization Program, which includes similar improvements in Sabana Llana, Monacillos, and other high-priority locations throughout the grid.

LUMA continues to advance dozens of reconstruction and modernization projects funded through federal and state programs, all aimed at strengthening infrastructure, reducing outages, and improving electric service quality for 1.5 million customers across Puerto Rico.
