LUMA Improvements Benefit Over 31,000 Customers in Humacao and Cidra

Humacao, Puerto Rico – October 29, 2025 – As part of its commitment to continue strengthening the electric service in the eastern region of the island, LUMA crews have completed maintenance work at the Verde Mar substation in Humacao, benefiting more than 3,000 customers in the area.

At the Verde Mar substation, crews performed maintenance on the transformer’s voltage regulator (Load Tap Changer or LTC), a critical component that regulates the voltage customers receive and minimizes fluctuations. This equipment requires maintenance every four years to ensure optimal performance and support the continuous operation of the transformer. Additionally, they replaced seven insulators known as “machetes,” which help improve service reliability and continuity in the area. These new polymer devices offer greater resistance and less accumulation of contaminants, thereby minimizing outages.

LUMA is also continuing the reconstruction of transmission line 12600, which connects the Naguabo TC and Verde Mar substations in Humacao. This line has been out of service since Hurricane Maria. It is essential for providing redundancy to the electrical system that serves more than 25,000 customers in Naguabo, Humacao, Vieques, and Culebra.

Currently, customers in Humacao rely solely on line 5400—which also supplies Vieques and Culebra—for service, increasing the risk of outages. Once line 12600 is operational, the frequency of outages will be significantly reduced, improving system reliability throughout the region.

Meanwhile, in the Caguas region, this Friday, October 31, crews will carry out maintenance on critical equipment in Cidra communities, where they will address hot spots identified through thermographic inspections and auxiliary equipment.

“These efforts in the Caguas area are essential to continue providing redundancy to the communities in these regions. That’s why it’s crucial to have the necessary funds in the accounts for transmission and distribution maintenance so that this work can continue as planned,” said Eng. Luis Maeso, Regional Manager of Distribution Lines for the Caguas region.

Finally, the transmission and distribution company emphasized that more of this type of work could be carried out if the necessary funds are deposited into the appropriate accounts to continue maintaining and modernizing the electrical system.
