LUMA Hosts its First Grid Transformation Day

The event showcased the research and contributions of interns and employees.

San Juan, Puerto Rico – April 23, 2024 – Today, LUMA proudly celebrated its first-ever Grid Transformation Day, at the Caribe Hilton hotel in San Juan. This groundbreaking event marks an important milestone in LUMA’s commitment to revolutionizing Puerto Rico’s energy landscape through education.

“Our Grid Transformation Day is a testament to our ongoing dedication to creating a cleaner, more resilient energy future for Puerto Rico,” said Dr. Shay Bahramirad, Senior VP of Transmission and Distribution, Strategy, and Sustainability at LUMA, and host of this inaugural occasion. “This event is not only about celebrating our achievements, but also about investing in our future leaders and committing to developing the next generation of clean energy experts. It serves as a platform for showcasing the groundbreaking complex projects of our talented interns and recent graduates from 6 universities across the island, while fostering collaboration and innovation within the industry.”

The event featured a special poster session, highlighting the progressive research and contributions of LUMA’s interns and employees. Speakers included esteemed guests such as Fermin Fontanés, Esq., Executive Director of Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority (P3). Attendees enjoyed insightful presentations, networking opportunities, and an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding contributions to the energy utilities field. Additionally, they received gratitude in a message from Juan Saca, President and CEO of LUMA.

“We are thrilled and grateful to have stakeholders, industry leaders, and leaders of the education community here with us for this momentous occasion,” stated Saca. “Grid Transformation Day represents a pivotal step forward in our collective efforts to shape the future of energy in Puerto Rico, and underscores LUMA’s commitment to nurturing and retaining talent from Puerto Rico.”

Grid Transformation Day represents a celebration of LUMA’s Center of Excellence, a platform that provides training and facilitates exchanges with world-renowned experts, enabling young talent to contribute to the development of a resilient and sustainable grid for the future. Established in November 2023, the Center has served as a platform for a succession of technical webinars, captivating over 200 participants. These sessions have delved into pivotal themes like networked microgrids, power grid monitoring, and the reliability and resilience of systems.
