For the second consecutive year, LUMA held informational sessions aimed at strengthening coordination and communication channels with Puerto Rico’s 78 municipalities.
San Juan, Puerto Rico – May 28, 2025 – As part of its ongoing commitment to emergency preparedness and active collaboration with the municipalities of Puerto Rico, LUMA held a second round of regional meetings to present and discuss its Emergency Response Plan (ERP), while reinforcing coordination and communication channels with all 78 municipalities on the Island.
These meetings provided an opportunity to review the key components of the 2025 ERP, which will soon be submitted to the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB), in accordance with regulatory requirements.
“With hurricane season approaching, we reaffirm our commitment to being prepared for a fast and effective response and recovery. These meetings are essential to ensuring an efficient and safe restoration of the system as part of our commitment to municipalities and customers across the Island,” said Melissa Pueyo, LUMA’s Director of Key Accounts. “Our goal is to ensure all stakeholders have the information and tools they need to respond effectively when they are needed most.”
LUMA’s Emergency Response Plan outlines the company’s priorities, protocols, and response structures for emergencies such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and other critical events. As part of a continuous improvement process, the plan is reviewed annually to incorporate lessons learned from past events and strengthen its effectiveness.
During the sessions, participants received detailed information about the operations of LUMA’s Emergency Operations Center (LEOC), regional centers, the Incident Command System (ICS), municipal points of contact, and the types of communications and reports shared during emergencies.
Strengthening the Electric Grid
In addition to operational preparedness, LUMA continues to execute substantial improvements to Puerto Rico’s electric infrastructure:
- Resilient poles: Over 28,600 poles replaced with models designed to withstand extreme winds.
- Automation technology: Over 10,300 automated devices installed, helping avoid over 271 million minutes of service interruptions.
- LED lighting: 177,000 LED lights installed across all 78 municipalities to improve safety and efficiency.
- Smart meters: 390,256 meters evaluated in preparation for the installation of 1.5 million smart meters.
- Renewable energy integration: 135,000 customers connected with solar systems, adding 940 MW of renewable energy to the grid.
- Vegetation management: More than 6,100 miles of lines cleared to reduce outages caused by trees and branches.
LUMA reaffirms its commitment to building a more reliable, resilient, and safer electric grid for its 1.5 million customers across Puerto Rico. These regional meetings with municipalities are a vital part of a preparedness culture that will continue to grow stronger each year.
