LUMA fosters spaces for women’s growth within and beyond the organization

Educational workshops, mentorship, recognition, and women-led markets highlight Women’s Week

San Juan, Puerto Rico – March 23, 2026 – LUMA, through its Women in LUMA (WIL) initiative, recently hosted a series of activities focused on the personal and professional development of women, as well as supporting local women entrepreneurs.

According to company data, LUMA has a workforce of more than 1,095 women, representing approximately 27% of its total employees. This exceeds the U.S. energy sector average, where female representation is around 25%, reinforcing LUMA’s leadership in promoting talent and advancing women’s professional growth in technical, operational, and leadership careers. Approximately 37 women work directly in the field, performing essential roles for the grid. Currently, LUMA is training 22 women in its Lineworker Apprenticeship Program to support the needs of the electric system, positioning it as the utility with the highest percentage of female line technicians in the nation.

The week’s activities, including workshops, learning sessions, recognition events, and women-led markets, brought together employees, guest speakers, and dozens of small business owners, reaffirming LUMA’s commitment to creating opportunities for women’s growth.

“At LUMA, we strongly believe in creating spaces where women can grow, learn, and continue developing their leadership. This week was a reflection of that commitment and the positive impact we can generate when we open doors for professional and personal development,” said Ivonne Gómez, LUMA’s Chief People Officer.

As part of the agenda, sessions focused on leadership, communication, wellness, and entrepreneurial experiences were led by distinguished professionals. Among them, engineer Doriel Pagán, LUMA’s Vice President of Federal Funds, led a leadership discussion alongside Eileen Vélez Vega, former Secretary of the Department of Transportation and Public Works, where they shared insights and experiences on the evolution of women’s leadership in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

Renowned communicator Yizette Cifredo presented the session “Your Words, Your Power,” focused on the importance of intentional communication and the impact of words on professional and personal relationships. Additionally, neurologist Dr. Vanessa Ríos addressed health topics, including migraines, highlighting the importance of overall well-being in professional performance.

During the week, LUMA also hosted two women entrepreneurs’ markets, featuring more than 50 women-led small businesses, many affiliated with the Centro para Puerto Rico and its entrepreneurship program. These markets provided a platform for entrepreneurs to showcase their products and connect with new customers within the organization, supporting LUMA’s broader commitment to Puerto Rico’s economic development.

The week also served to recognize participants in the Women in LUMA pilot mentorship program, an initiative designed to foster professional development through the exchange of experiences between leaders and emerging talent.

“At LUMA, we believe in the power of professional mentorship and in the impact of connecting our leaders with emerging talent. This pilot program reaffirms our commitment to advancing women’s growth and creating meaningful development opportunities within the organization,” added the executive.

This program aims to strengthen leadership capabilities within the organization while continuing to expand professional growth opportunities.

Looking ahead, Women in LUMA aims to expand these initiatives to also impact young people and professionals outside the organization, promoting continuous learning and supporting the next generation of leaders in the energy sector.

Through initiatives like these, LUMA reaffirms its commitment to creating spaces where women can grow, lead, and make an impact—both within the organization and in the communities it serves.
