LUMA Executes Preventive Plan to Strengthen the Electrical System Ahead of Bad Bunny Events

As part of the plan developed more than two months ago, preventive measures and maintenance work were conducted in the high-traffic, tourist zones of the San Juan metropolitan area

San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 10, 2025 – As part of its commitment to improving Puerto Rico’s energy future and recognizing the importance of the island’s economic development, LUMA has collaborated with state and municipal agencies to develop and implement a proactive work plan in recent months.  This plan supports the necessary electrical infrastructure and increases service reliability during Bad Bunny’s residency in Puerto Rico and related event activities.

“Our commitment is clear: to proactively address critical needs of a fragile system, respond quickly in the event of service interruptions, and collaborate with all key components to support large-scale events like Bad Bunny’s residence. We understand that these events represent a significant boost to the local economy, which is why we have participated in meetings with the administrators of the Coliseo de Puerto Rico and the Convention District, as well as hotels and other local businesses to support their success,” said Melissa Pueyo, Director of Key Accounts at LUMA. She noted that similar collaborations has been in place for other concerts and sporting events.

In addition to coordinating with state and municipal agencies to facilitate the deployment of crews to critical areas in the event of service interruptions, LUMA teams completed the following actions to reduce the risk of outages:

  • Proactive inspection of substations serving Condado, Isla Verde, Hato Rey, and Santurce
  • Repairs to the underground system in Condado, Santurce, and Hato Rey
  • Hot spots repairs to prevent prolonged outages
  • Vegetation management near distribution lines in the San Juan area

Also, as part of LUMA’s plans to improve the electrical system, transformers, breakers and other critical components have been repaired or replaced in substations across the area, including Hato Rey TC, Llorens Torres, Viaducto, and Villamar, since 2024. This preventive approach also included inspections and upgrades to key distribution lines in the area.

“Since June, LUMA activated an incident management team and established an action plan to respond in a coordinated and immediate manner to any unexpected situation during the event,” said Pueyo.

Additionally, LUMA teams continue to collaborate with the Integrated Transport Authority (ATI, in Spanish) to support its repairs to the private substation of the Urban Train that went out of service in May. “As soon as we receive the report confirming the Tren Urbano (Urban Train) operator has completed the required system adjustments and configurations, our team will authorize the connection of loads so that the system can be fully and safely restored,  without impact to the grid and the rest of our customers,” Pueyo said. LUMA reaffirms its commitment to supporting the island’s economic development and to continuing collaboration on high-profile events that promote Puerto Rico’s culture, tourism, and well-being.
