Completed Modernization Benefits More Than 10,000 Customers in the Midwest
Adjuntas, PR – March 23, 2026 – LUMA announced the successful energization of the new transformer at the Yahuecas Substation in Adjuntas, an essential infrastructure that replaces equipment with more than 70 years of operation and benefits more than 10,000 customers in the central region.
In addition to the transformer replacement, the project included a complete renovation of the substation, modernizing and strengthening a facility that serves as a critical point for electrical distribution in the central region. This effort was made possible by the coordinated collaboration of multiple internal teams responsible for the planning, execution, and energization of the new transformer.
Over the past few months, constant communication was also conducted with impacted communities and external partners to inform them of scheduled outages needed to complete work safely and efficiently.
“The modernization represents a direct benefit for more than 10,000 customers and businesses in the municipalities of Adjuntas, Lares, Las Marías and Maricao, communities that depend on this strategic point to receive a more stable, safe and resilient electricity service. The new transformer increases system capacity, improves voltage regulation and reduces the possibility of unexpected interruptions, particularly in a mountainous area where infrastructure faces greater operational challenges,” Hendzon Martinez, Director of Substations at LUMA.
LUMA stressed that this project reflects the importance of renewing equipment that has exceeded its useful life and that continues to be essential to guarantee the reliability of service in Puerto Rico.
