LUMA Details Historic Renewable Energy Advances in Report to PREB

 Company adds more than 99MW of home solar distributed generation in nine months.

San Juan, Puerto Rico, April 1, 2022 – Today, LUMA filed its 2022 Renewable Energy Compliance Report, outlining the significant actions and progress made to build a cleaner, more renewable energy future. Since assuming operations of the transmission and distribution system in June 2021, LUMA has been working closely with the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) to accelerate the adoption of home solar and empower the growth of renewable energy across Puerto Rico.

“Since June 1st, 2021, our team of more than 3,000 men and women have worked together with our customers, regulators, government agencies, and leading green energy experts to help build a cleaner and more affordable energy future. With 18,000 new residential solar connections, totaling more than 99 MW of clean energy, LUMA is proud that during our first nine months in operation we have grown customer-owned renewable energy at a pace that Puerto Rico has never seen – and there is more to come,” said LUMA President, Wayne Stensby.

As outlined in the report, while LUMA is not responsible for procurement of new renewable energy, the company has undertaken a series of actions to empower the growth of home solar and clean energy, reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels, and advance renewable energy goals for Puerto Rico. While there is much more work to do, some of the most significant clean energy actions taken by LUMA to date include the following:

  • Thousands of New Home Solar Connections: Connecting more than 18,000 customer-owned solar photovoltaic systems to the grid in just nine months;
  • Over 99 MW of Clean Energy Added To Grid: The 18,000 new solar connections translate into more than 99 MW or over ~2,100 distributed generation services activated per month;
  • 40 Transmission Voltage Distributed Energy Resource Applications: Working with 40 active transmission voltage distributed energy resource (DER) applications representing approximately 100 MW;
  • New Studies to Help Integrate Utility-Scale Clean Energy: Conducting studies to determine how to integrate the 844 MW of new utility scale renewable energy approved by PREB from the first tranche of the Request for Proposals;
  • Coordinating with Utility Scale Wind & Solar Generators: Coordinating with three other utility scale wind and solar energy facilities, totaling over 175 MW, to interconnect them safely to the grid as soon as possible;
  • Providing Interconnections Capacity Maps: Issuing publicly available digital Interconnection Capacity Maps for distribution and performing the first map update;
  • Coordinating with Local & Federal Partners to Achieve 100% Renewable Energy Future: Coordinating with multiple local and federal agencies, including the: US Department of Energy (DOE) on the Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transitions to 100% Renewable Energy (PR100) Program;
  • Empowering the Growth of Electric Vehicles: Working on a Phase I Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Deployment Plan that will identify actions to support increased EV adoption across Puerto Rico.
  • Enabling Economic Integration of Renewables: Performing industry cutting-edge study in support of Tranche 2 to identify locations for deployment for a total of 500 MW renewable with no required network upgrades.

“Whether it is the higher price of gas our customers use to fuel their cars or the higher price of generation fuels that are used to power PREPA’s generation facilities, we know that building a cleaner and greener energy future is incredibly important for all our customers,” Stensby said. “LUMA is proud to fully support the growth of clean energy across Puerto Rico – it’s what our customers want and deserve.”

As part of a commitment to a clean energy future for Puerto Rico, LUMA continues to prioritize strengthening the grid to enable sustainable energy transformation. The modernization of Puerto Rico’s transmission and distribution system is critical to increased reliability and resilience, as well as to transform the electricity grid into a flexible, modern, smart platform leveraging renewable energy for our 1.5 million customers.
