LUMA CONTINUES TO PRIORITIZE REPAIRS OF CRITICAL ELECTRIC INFRASTRUCTURE IN REGIONS OF PONCE & MAYAGÜEZ  

CURRENT RESTORATION UPDATE: LUMA RESTORES 92% OF CUSTOMERS IMPACTED BY HURRICANE FIONA

San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 2, 2022 – Today, LUMA announced that it has restored electric service to over 1.34 million customers, or 92% of total customers. Given the severity of damage in the hardest hit regions, LUMA utility field crews continue to prioritize and perform critical repairs across the western and southern areas of the island and is on track to meet its estimated restoration timeframe of October 4-6 for Ponce and Mayagüez. These two regions suffered the most damage from Hurricane Fiona, including severe flooding and damage to local roads, bridges and electric infrastructure.

“While we have restored electric service to 92% of our customers impacted by Hurricane Fiona across Puerto Rico, we remain focused on restoring power to all our customers. In the areas to the south and west, which suffered the most damage from Fiona, we continue to prioritizing repairs of critical electric infrastructure in those regions. To address local concerns, our teams continue to reach out to local leaders and municipalities to ensure we all work together to restore power to every customer as quickly and safely as possible,” said LUMA Engineer Daniel Hernández.

Current Restoration Updates

LUMA has restored power to 92% of customers across Puerto Rico and has restored 100% of customers in the specific service regions of San Juan and Bayamón, 97% of customers in the service region of Caguas and 94% of customers in the service region of Arecibo. LUMA has also restored service to 100% of hospitals, and 93% of all PRASA water facilities.

Regional Restoration Prioritization & Updates

Hurricane Fiona severely impacted critical parts of the electric grid and generation facilities across Puerto Rico, especially in the Ponce and Mayagüez regions that suffered severe damage to critical infrastructure. LUMA has over 700 utility field workers in Mayagüez and Ponce to conduct repairs and support restoration efforts in these two hardest hit regions.

Ponce Service Region Updates – October 2, 2022

  • Approximately 84% of customers restored
  • 193 damage assessments completed to date
  • 145 distribution feeders energized to date
  • 31 crews mobilized
  • Work underway today to restore 25 more distribution feeders

Mayagüez Service Region Updates – October 2, 2022

  • Approximately 68% of customers restored
  • 190 damage assessments completed to date
  • 141 distribution feeders energized to date
  • 36 crews mobilized
  • Work underway today to restore 19 more distribution feeders
