The initiative seeks to reinforce the physical security and reliability of the system, and establishes a collaboration model available to other interested municipalities
Aibonito, PR – May 19, 2026 – LUMA and the Municipality of Aibonito announced the signing of an interagency agreement aimed at keeping the areas around the municipality’s electrical substations clear of vegetation to reduce operational risks with physical security and improve the aesthetics of the surrounding communities. The initiative was part of Corporate Security’s efforts focused on protecting critical facilities and promoting safer spaces for nearby communities.
According to the agreement, the Municipality of Aibonito assumed the tasks of cleaning and managing dangerous vegetation in the vicinity of the substations, while LUMA will provide the necessary technical support and cover the costs of the Municipality associated with the execution of these works.
“At LUMA we remain committed to strengthening the reliability of the electrical system throughout the island, and this collaborative effort with the Municipality of Aibonito is a great example of what we can achieve by working together,” said Hendzon Martínez, director of Substation Operations at LUMA.
Proper vegetation control in the vicinity of substations deters theft by outsiders and the presence of wildlife attracted to dense areas of foliage, which can cause interruptions in electrical service. In addition, it facilitates immediate access to the facilities in emergency situations and contributes to maintaining a safer and more pleasant environment for the community.
As part of the first phase, a deep cleaning of hazardous vegetation was carried out at the two substations in Aibonito using heavy equipment. A regular maintenance schedule will then be implemented with work twice a month to ensure that the areas remain in optimal condition.
Martínez stressed that this collaboration is part of a broader effort to strengthen the reliability of the electricity system throughout the island and affirmed his interest in extending this initiative to other municipalities that wish to join.
