(Santurce, PR – June 4, 2024) Due to the severe weather events that began on Saturday, June 1, LUMA is taking proactive measures according to its Emergency Response Plan. This morning, at 6:00 a.m., LUMA activated its Emergency Operations Center (LEOC) to strategically deploy over 900 field employees to restore service to affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.
As part of the response, LUMA has developed a contingency plan to address a critical transformer situation in the southern part of the island. This plan includes a rotating service interruption schedule for sectors in the municipalities of Santa Isabel, Coamo, and Aibonito that have been without service for more than 24 hours. The objective of this contingency plan is to minimize the impact of the transformer failure in Santa Isabel, which also provides service to Coamo and sectors of Aibonito. Under this plan, communities will be rotated to ensure they all receive up to 8 hours of service daily while a permanent solution is being implemented. These schedules will be shared through LUMA’s social media channels. Critical loads such as water pumps and hospitals will not be affected by these rotating schedules and will have uninterrupted electrical service, coordinated with municipal personnel in each town.
“To the extent possible, we will make changes to the rotating interruption plan to reduce the impact on our customers. We are actively working on identifying long-term solutions to ensure robust and reliable electrical service for Santa Isabel, Coamo, and Aibonito,” said Alejandro González, Director of Lines for LUMA’s central and southern region. “We reiterate to our customers throughout Puerto Rico that we are committed to working hard to transform Puerto Rico’s electrical system. We ask everyone to make room for the LUMA brigade so they can do their work and ensure everyone’s safety.”
