The modernization of the transformer in Isla Grande will guarantee greater reliability for communities and critical sectors
San Juan, PR – May 13, 2026 – LUMA completed the installation and energization of the new transformer at the Isla Grande substation, a key project within the improvements planned to reinforce the stability and reliability of the electrical system that serves residents, businesses and tourist sectors of Old San Juan, Isla Grande and nearby communities.
The energization, carried out after the work completed on April 28, represents a significant advance in the face of the increase in summer demand. This new modernized equipment strengthens the electrical infrastructure in an area of great economic, commercial and residential activity.
The 115/38 kV, 112 MVA transformer was integrated into the existing Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation. This technology allows the development of more compact, efficient and environmentally resistant installations, improving the reliability of the system in urban environments where space is limited.
This enhancement helps reduce the risk of disruptions, increase resilience to unforeseen events, and support the day-to-day operation of businesses, hotels, homes, and community spaces in the areas served.
“This project is a fundamental step to guarantee a reliable service. With this enhancement, we strengthen the electric grid that serves thousands of customers and diverse economic and community activities, ensuring stable energy for all,” said Pedro Melendez, Chief Capital Projects and Grid Transformation Officer.
LUMA will continue to implement planned improvements and reaffirms its commitment to transforming the electric grid for the benefit of communities and strategic sectors throughout the island.
