Improvements Strengthen the Electrical System in Naranjito and Benefit Over 10,400 Customers

Work on substations and transmission lines reinforces service reliability in the area

Naranjito, PR – January 16, 2026– As part of joint efforts to improve the electrical system, transmission, distribution, substation, and vegetation crews mobilized last Thursday, January 15, in a coordinated effort to impact different areas of the municipality and benefit more than 10,400 customers in the region, including schools and critical loads in Naranjito, Barranquitas, and Corozal.

At the substations located in the town center, wildlife protection equipment, better known as “animal guards,” was installed to safeguard the system against possible animal contact. Additionally, 12 lightning arresters were replaced, improving protection against voltage spikes and reducing the risk of network failures. Worn-out distribution disconnect switches were also replaced, and critical points on the lines previously identified through thermographic cameras were corrected. These cameras detect overheating that, if left unaddressed, could cause service interruptions.

The transformers at these substations had already undergone maintenance cycles in previous years, allowing the work to focus on strengthening system protection and addressing specific components to improve performance and operational reliability.

Furthermore, equipment was replaced on transmission lines connected to the Comerío Transmission Center substation—components that had not been replaced in over 10 years and that link to two main transmission lines in the Bayamón region.

As part of preventive patrols of transmission lines, aerial inspections by helicopter identified more than seven areas requiring vegetation clearing. These tasks were carried out in compliance with industry standards for line clearance.

“We’re talking about replacing equipment that had exceeded its useful life or even lacked necessary connections for proper operation. With this effort, we improve the electrical system, increase redundancy, and reduce interruptions in the area. All of this was achieved in coordination with municipal entities for the benefit of our customers,” highlighted Reinaldo Aponte, Eastern Region Substation Supervisor, who has over 22 years of experience in the electrical system.
