Important Maintenance Work at La Rambla Substations in Ponce to Benefit Over 25,000 Customers

These maintenance activities will take place on Wednesday, February 11, from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., impacting more than 10,300 customers.

Ponce, PR – February 11, 2026 – As part of the critical work required for the transmission and distribution electrical system, LUMA is performing essential maintenance at the substations in the La Rambla community in Ponce. This includes replacing components to improve service stability and redundancy for over 25,000 customers in the region, including local hospitals.

The work crews will replace the main disconnect switch rated at 38,000 volts, conduct testing, and perform preventive and corrective maintenance on the transformer. These efforts are in preparation for connecting transmission line 4500, which has been out of service since Hurricane María and is expected to return to service during the first quarter of the year. Additionally, the breaker associated with the transmission line will be connected, which will result in benefits for more than 25,000 customers in the area. These tasks are required to comply with industry standards.

“Our commitment is to strengthen the reliability of the electrical system for the communities we serve. These projects are essential and critical to ensure customers have a more stable and secure service,” said Hendzon Martínez, Substation Director, who has over 23 years of experience in the electrical grid.

This initiative is part of LUMA’s Preventive and Corrective Maintenance Plan implemented at substations across Puerto Rico to address accumulated system deterioration and improve reliability. All work is carried out in strict compliance with local and federal environmental regulations to protect natural resources and avoid any impact during the process.

Among the critical load customers who will benefit from these improvements are: Civil Defense, Fire Department, Rambla Police Station, AAA Treatment Plant in Ponce Vieja (La Borinquen), San Lucas Medical Tower, AAA La Yuca Pump Station, and San Lucas Hospital 1.
